If you think Lifted is the best in Portland you are gonna freak out when you go to Just Be/Compound. Although they seem to be carrying a lot less shoes nowadays (the entire rack facing Upper Playground is now gone? ).

upper playground is alright and its right next to justbe. There arent new retros every month, but they are frequent. Niketown for Jays and justbe for the rest. Lifted also will have the new Jays when they release

How long have you lived in Portland? It has been heading in this general direction for years. Actually Alberta isn't a great example anyway as it is considered an arts district. Albina is really the area that got hit hard...but it was to be expected as there are limited areas that regular people can afford anymore that are anywhere near the city core.

Gresham has been poor since the beginning of time tho, just maybe not as ethnically diverse.

***I'm editing this 6 hours later as I just got off the phone with my friend. He is in a rehab program house that is a few blocks from DOS and was talking about how one of the topics in their house meeting was "all the little white skater kids hanging around". I found it pretty timely considering the gentrification post...pretty good example right there :)

As for Exit, they were a Salem/Portland store (plus one in Government Camp I think)...the fact they have another shop in Bridgeport just means they are doing well. Good for them.

I know the owner of Exit, and well, she made her store successful and legit around a core group of people. Exit is one of the top 5 most legit snowboard retailers in the world. I am willing to defend that statement. Anyone who grew up around that shop knows that they're way cool people and deserving of some bullshit SB account. Lake Oswego and Tigard still fucking suck though.

I think its lame as fuck to have a store at Bridgeport, but just to clarify, when I asked Missy why Exit moved from Glisan to NW 23rd, she told me that it had always been her goal since the early days of the store in the mid 90s. She isn't some born yesterday hipster fuck.

You see a lot of people in Portland and Seattle driving around expensive cars, but dressing in basic clothing. It is hard to get too excited about wearing $400 shoes when it is raining all the time. Other than the few nice months in the summer or whatever it is usually more about utility than fashion up here.

Personally, I spent a lot more time/money on clothing when I was in LA. The weather is good 90% of the time and there is always this 'keep up with the jones's' thing that goes on with respect to image. Not saying that is always a good thing...I would like to think that I am not always being judged on what I happen to be wearing at the moment, even though we all know its true (to some degree).

Well I went in there last week and they were telling me how there getting there resumes ready to apply for some real jobs. They said they were pretty disappointed about it and how its hard to keep up a small boutique when anyone could just get the stuff there selling at the mall or other places. He was also saying how he knows a bunch of other boutiques that are struggling to. Is that true? I find it hard to believe that it would be so difficult to keep a business like that going strong. Maybe I just am nieve but I just think they didnt have that good of a store and if they created more of a buzz with different products that they would have done better. I dont want to put them down to much considering I did go in there and get some stuff for more then half off and that made me pretty happy.

After shopping at the Employee Store, Niketown, Just B/Compound, and Lifted I thought that Just B/Compound was the best overall, carried more brands and had a better shopping experience although some the customer service was a bit lacking at times. Lifted was cool, a lot of good stuff on sale when I stopped by. Niketown is what it is...and same goes for the Employee Store.

No one has ever been able to sell alife in portland, and it all ends up selling brand new for $20 a pair... I just wish I could have copped more OG alife when NAC went under 4 years ago... That shit was all priced to move.

And yeah, Local 35 blows. I live so close to it and stop in like twice a year only to be disappointed and stared at.
