NORFOLK, VA. (JUNE 19, 2007)- Commonwealth announced today that it will sponsor the Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports (RDM) #91 Toyota Camry driven by Marc Goossens at Infineon Raceway on June 24, 2007.

NASCAR is America's fastest growing sport, second only to the National Football League in the number of television viewers. It is also America's most exclusionary athletic enterprise in terms of race and sex. There is a focus to encourage change in the sport to allow for more diversity.

“We are proud to be part of the diverse future of NASCAR,” said Omar Quiambao, Commonwealth co-founder. “By partnering with Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports, we look forward to exposure of the Commonwealth lifestyle amongst the fans of NASCAR as well as helping grow the diversity of its fan base.”

This partnership allows two young, but determined companies to put their stamp on a Nextel Cup event. In their initial partnership, Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports and Commonwealth will attempt their first “Car of Tomorrow” race at a road course. Just as a road course brings a different mindset to a NEXTEL Cup event, so does this partnership.

“We are very pleased to be associated with a company so diverse in their market area as Commonwealth,” said Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports co-owner Eddie D’Hondt. “We anticipate bringing the NASCAR fan more in touch with the in-style clothing lines Commonwealth has to offer. Commonwealth and NASCAR will be a great fit for each other.”

Tune in Sunday, June 24th, 2007 at 5 PM (EST) on TNT to see the Commonwealth sponsored Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports #91 Toyota Camry in action.

Marc Goossens brings a diversified racing background to the team and is looking forward to being back behind the wheel of a stock car. “I am excited to be driving the #91 Toyota Camry for Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports and representing Commonwealth,” said Goossens. “Combining my driving experience with the leadership and technology of RDM should be a winning combination.”

About Marc Goossens

Born in Belgium, Goossens has raced all over the world and is currently the lead driver of the #91 Riley-Matthews Motorsports Pontiac Riley in the Rolex Grand American Series. Goossens is known for his ability to quickly adapt to any type of car and track. Having started his racing career in go-karts, Goossens quickly established himself at a young age winning the 1991 British Formula Ford Championship before going on to win numerous races and a championship in the FIA F3000 series.

About Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports
Riley-D’Hondt Motorsports is in their first year of operation with famed motorsports engineers Bob and Bill Riley and NASCAR veteran Eddie D’Hondt serving as owners of the team. They also complete with the #91 Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Busch Series.

I think nascar and commonwealth clash. They're totally different demographics and interests. I view nascar fans as 35-50 year old, southern white family oriented, while I see commonwealth customers as 15-30yr old streetwear/hip hop aesthetic enthusiasts. Seems like a costly endeavor w/ amistargeted audience.

Pretty much. When I read that I sorta drifted back to the marketing classes I had to take...I think if I would have drafted a proposal pairing up these two entities I would be failing that class :)

That said, sometimes gambles work. They are obviously trying to reach an untapped market instead of concentrating all their efforts on people who are already loyal (ie, hypebeast people).

FUBU sponsored a car at Indy...anyone remember that? :)

since I know alot of tune heads are also streetwear heads, I would have thought of them tryin to sponsor a drift car or pure track car before nascar(which is sooooooo boring except for crashes). its like golf, its only fun if you're doing it

Maybe they figured they didn't want to go after a crossover market (since like you said a lot of the import car people are also streetwear people).

Not to sound negative, but I think if this advertising worked and the Nascar fanbase started buying up the streetwear clothes a lot of people here would be pissed off in a sense. Exclusivity is important, and if Bubba is wearing your favorite 'underground brand' that might cause some problems.

skoalXsupreme collab?
