it's safe to say that the state is famous enough that people know what city it is representing.

los angeles, hollywood, etc. need no introduction.

if i do happen to need to mention state, i simply say california. "cali" has such an out of state ring to it...and it's ALWAYS what i hear tourists, or out of state newbie residents calling it because they're trying to get down with the locals.

"cali" has that whole nor-cal ring to it...it reminds me of lame ass slang like "hella". i blame tupacs dumb ass for hyping the term "cali" up so much in the early 90's...as well as ll cool j for that lame ass song. but to be fair, some blame has to lay with biggy for stealing that whole song and bringing it back.
