View Full Version : Scifen x Quan A.L.I.E.N The Collabo That Never Was

If anyone of you hasn’t seen this then here’s the background story.
ALIEN did a photo shoot a while back with Atsuko Tanka the pictures were pretty dope.
Scifen were running out of ideas their design team were looking for a way out.
So instead of brainstorming some original ideas they decided to steal Quan’s face and use on a t-shirt. Now that’s all well and good as long as you tell the person right? Well they didn't.
Here's the result.

i could go on a huge rift about how much i dislike this guy's(and the whole ALIEN) style. but instead i'll just say this: the shirt was whack anyway.

hypothetically speaking.... could Scifen possibly be making a statement, therefore deliberately choosing to put his face on thier tee?
maybe expressing thier point of view on the scene or what not?

Why do you say that?
Reason i ask is that im from London, so i know nothing about that steez.
Plus my friend just came back from NYC and before he left he was an ALIEN fan but when he came back he changed his mind. Reason being that every black person in NYC has that ALIEN steez.
Is this correct?
Do they get bullied on the streets for their loud clothing?

^i'm not sure. i'm a philly street runner, not NYC. but i have seen pics of this guy and his crew and they look like clowns. it's not the loud colors.. cause you can make loud colors look steezy if you have any kind of style. but these guys look like clowns. straight up and down. they try waaaaaay to hard to be retro, and end up looking like tools because of it.
and being that it's in NYC, were kids are literally walking around looking for someone's cock to hop on it caught on. if you're not an indivisualistic person and you see someone doing something out of the ordinary you're immediately going to want to do what that person's doing.. or if you don't have the balls you'll atleast admire him. and that's why i think dude's so popular in NYC.
again, im not hating on the cat.. props to a fellow negro doing his thing.. can't knock any man's hustle.. i just think him and his whole crew look like idiots.

I feel you on both fronts.
I remember time ago Quan coming on here and saying that him and his crew aren't the doing the retro look. But who knows, our interpretation of retro might be their ‘mashing together of different influences’.
I just know for a fact you wouldn't be able to get away with it in London.
Black people in London already get a hard time as it is if your seen wearing a pair of Vans and a Obey hoody, you’re automatically classed as a Bounty.
I just dont get why everyone was getting worked up in the 1st place Scifen is shit, no?

yeah, it's somewhat the same in america.. but i feel like anywere if you're confident/cool enough then people won't question you.. when i go back to my old hood in a "Fucking Awesome" tee, with some slim-cut(yet still loose) raw denim, a fitted, and a pair of sk8-hi's no one really says shit to me. might be a dude here and there that doesn't know any better.. but for the most part cats on the block and what not just laugh like "B, you crazy.. but you pull it off." when in fact i don't feel like its crazy at all..
but i suppose in different areas there's always going to be strain on the black man to live up to that area or person's idea of what a negro is. i's ain't tap dancin' for these cats, though.

Yeah, yeah same here.
I normally get the acknowledgment for pulling off a look but never get laughed down the street.
Its funny cause some of them say my jeans are mad tight but their just straight cut raw denim when everyone else in hood wears boot cut denim! Ha.
Ermm translation for Bounty comes from the chocolate bar called Bounty.
Black (chocolate) on the outside, white (coconut) on the inside.
scifen =wack
that guy and his attire=wack
do the math folks....no ones gonna buy it anyways
*waits for rant about how dope scifen was back in the day and about how original and ill the guy wit the johnny appleseed look is*

Alright lets talk from a first person view from someone actually there and seeing this happen.
ALIEN, I have never never seen claim to be retro. Retro is the Retro Kids. They rock haircuts from Juice and acid wash jeans. THAT is straight retro.
ALIEN just claims to be what their name suggests, they are not normal people. They separate themselves through what they wear because of that fact. They are the kids who were always different.
Its like when people see me in WDYWT thread and say Im bring retro back. Not at all, this is just me dressing. The jeans the hats the whole thing is just how I wake up and dress. Ive always dressed different its not about retro or fresh its just me. Thats what ALIEN represents from what Ive heard from Quan.
Now for everyone looking like ALIEN in NYC???
Thats the most rediculous shit Ive ever heard, I dont blame you your across the pond so you couldnt see. But even in your walked around Soho. Which is the trendy area where all of these sneaker boutiques are and all of these sneaker heads and crews chill around you stiillll will not see ALIEN style. You will see exactly what you see in the WDYWT thread. Raw denim, Bape, and a shit load of Dunks. You see occasional "retro" and other styles but its rare. A lot of people attempt to emulate but no one really follows that whole style to jack it.
If you see something with an "ALIEN" type style more than likely they are down with that crew or someone associated with it.
Bullied on the street? Please, there grown men no one is bullying anyone/
excuse the little rant there...Ask me anything else you have I like answering

I know they aren't retro. I mentioned that Quan pointed it out a while back, i know.
My friend and i repeat my friend went to NYC a few weeks ago. He came back and said he wasn't feeling the ALIEN steez because every other black person in NYC is doing what they're doing. Call it retro call it just them doing them, that’s just what he saw.
I've always supported ALIEN and what they do especially the whole DIY ethic behind it.
Soho London isn't like Soho NYC, we have Nu Rave and Adidct all over the street. The average person in London doesn't even know what Bape is.

Since thief pointed out that its an easy to find stock image, then it brings up the question: Did scifen use the photo because quan was on it, or because it was graff related.
Im more thinkin they used it because they wanted to make a lame graffiti style shirt, being clueless to the fact the even lamer quan was on it.

No offense to Quan but i doubt scifen ever even considdered he was somebody. i think they just found a photo and used it. in fact i think if they knew that this woulda happened they wouldn't have just used Quan's likeness like that. just my guestimation
