3sixteen Cousins shirt meaning?

So I know the whole point is "Sleep is the cousin of death," but is that a reference from somewhere specifically? Someone told me it was a Nas song. Or just a phrase common to those in the hood?

Most people who I show the shirt to don't get it; they think it's funny but just because it's bizarre that a dwarf (they don't recognize it's Sleepy) and the Grim Reaper are cousins.

If you explain the phrase afterwards, then most people say "Oh, I could see that," or something, but generally they don't get it.

I think the design is amazing though, this shirt is great.
