TIGER TRANSLATE. 20/03/10.
March 19, 2010

The busy art weekend continues.

A month or so ago we were commissioned by Tiger Beer to build an installation for their annual celebration of the arts & music here - Tiger Translate. The Tiger Translate event was a New Zealand born concept in 2006, which then spread like wildfire across the world with Tiger Translate events now hosted in Dublin, London, Berlin, Ho Chi Minh, Singapore, Copenhagen, Shanghai, New York, and more. Earlier on in the year we hosted the official launch and announcement for this year's big event, which is set to be the biggest one ever after opening it to public attendance.

Each year a handful of local creatives are contacted to put together installations across different mediums, so throw in some big international DJs, a truckload of local music talent, 1500 people and an infinite supply of Tiger Beer and the result is one of the biggest art/culture events of the year.

This year they're holding the event in anincredible venue - The Masonic Lodge on St Benedict's street. I'm not sure if it's still used for Masonic rites, but I've had an interesting time in between setting up our installation exploring the various rooms, antechambers, and the general layout of the building. What's with all the peepholes into all the rooms? (any ex-masons care to share?) There's a lot of secret passageways and hallways, and a ton of symbols, plinths and geometric shapes. The building is split into three floors too, with different DJs and music styles on each floor, so should make for an pretty intense event.

In another 'small world' moment, I've also just found out that my friend Luca Ionescu, whom I met on my recent trip to Melbourne for Buffet designed the lettering and branding for the Tiger Translate event. What a sick.... nevermind.

The headline music acts for this year is 2002 DMC World Champion DJ Kentaro (Tokyo), and hugely popular Melbourne electronica artist MUSCLES.

Here's a quick video of some of the Tiger Translate events & projects over the years, including the inaugural 2006 event in Auckland, New Zealand.

If you are in Auckland, unfortunately they've run out of the first free 500 tickets on the tiger beer website, but they will be selling a limited amount of tickets at the door tonight for $30.

I've had the privilege to see a sneak preview of the installations ahead of tonight's VIP opening reception and the big party. Believe me, you won't be disappointed by what everybody's come up with. There's some incredible displays in there, and some have gone all out to create something truly special for the night. I hope all of you will enjoy our installation (both parts of it) too.

Just for your information, the theme we were briefed on to create our installations were "BALANCE", and "EAST MEETS WEST". You can keep that in mind whilst looking through them tonight.

I look forward to sharing with you our installation that we've set up at the Tiger Translate event tonight. If not, look for pictures on here after tonight.
