AN EVENING WITH SENOR SUERTE.
September 13, 2009

On Saturday night we hosted an invite-only event for some of New Zealand's most dedicated street art and culture personalities to attend a presentation by Chaz Bojorquez in our quarters boutique space. Thirty invites were extended for this special session, which filled the house as artists, collectors, and friends came to listen to this living legend speak in his first presentation here in New Zealand.

Chaz went on to share some amazing stories from his career, from playing and subsequently painting during his youth in the underground sewage tunnels of East Los Angeles, the emergence and history of the Chicano culture from the 40's to the 70's, his pride, up-bringing, cultural references and challenges being an Mexican-American, as well as explaining the background of his symbol-laden artwork, like "Senor Seurte" (Mr. Lucky), his infamous skull character that went on to be adopted by local cholo gang Los Avenues as a sign of protection against death.

The attendees were also given a chance to participate in a Q&A session with Chaz, where they were able to ask him questions about his work, life, career, and projects. This also gave Chaz the opportunity to break down some of the pieces on display, pointing out subtle references that are normally not described in books or magazines featuring his work.

Thank you again for everything Chaz, and for the knowledge you shared with us. I hope you had a safe flight home.

We have left some of unsold prints in our quarters boutique space on display for the upcoming week. If you are in Auckland, please do not miss this rare opportunity to see or book some of his artwork on display, including an original he painted during his stay in Auckland. If you are out of town and would like to enquire about booking the prints and artwork or would like to find out which pieces are on display, please do contact the store on store@qubicstore.com.

It is a Te Reo Maori waiata (song). Maori is the native language of New Zealand, although English is our official language. I believe someone gave Chaz the words and he wrote it as a study. I'm also certain that it's the only work Chaz has done in this language, and it is an original piece, so a pretty cool piece of history. It has just sold today to a private buyer.
