Shameless Self Promotion
June 21, 2010

The internet has ruined everything.

I'm not talking about access to movie downloads being able to order a pizza online, high five for that information superhighway. However the impersonal access to people via email and social media has made interaction a lost art. I can lament about how people don't talk anymore because of the internet, but hell, due to my bouts of social awkwardness if given the choice to hide in a dumpster or engage in small talk i would be promptly looking for a stick to prop the dumpster lid open so the scent of molded meat byproducts would be slightly more bearable.

The ability to reach multiple people with the click of a key has created a more brazen self promoter unafraid to peddle his wares to the faceless masses that had the unfortunate circumstance of being lumped in on a wayward email list that he happened to intercept.

Creativity, resourcefulness and drive have become casualties of mass emailings, facebook groups and twitter blasts most of them un-warranted, unsolicited and unwanted.

No one to my knowledge has ever been discovered through the sending of their art blindly through social media. Its impersonal and for lack of better words bad form.

In marketing you need to target your audience and build a personal connection.

When Mike Cherman wanted to get a job in design he didn't randomly contact every design firm with a copy and paste cover letter.

He found out who he wanted to work for and created a campaign targeted in visually harassing that company to hire him. That company happened to be Staple Design.

Cherman found the walking route between Jeff Staple's apartment and his office space and literally plastered the walls between the 2 points with his promotional posters. As fast as the city could take them down, he put them right back up again making it impossible for Jeff not to notice his aggressively assholish campaign.

So how'd it end up? Well it ended up with Mike getting arrested. It also ended up with Mike getting an interview at Staple design so it balances out his day in central booking.

Effort and innovation are always appreciated, in the product and the process. Creativity does not stop with the end product. Don't end up in someone's trash folder.

This is truly remarkable, hats off to Mike for this awesome idea and it's execution.

A bit easier to pull off as a graphic designer than say a musician, but still proves that originality pays off.

Well the idea is that there are other creative ways of promotion. He could have gone the conventional route but that wouldn't get anyones attention.

hats off to mike for thinking outside the box.

i wonder tho if there could possibly be a danger to this type of tenacious perseverance.

like i very much get how randomly sending your ish to random emails/twitter accounts is a punk move. its safe and minimizes the discouraging effects of rejection.

but on the same token, couldn't being too aggressive in trying to get the attention of someone you want to work for backfire more often than not?

haha, as someone that's bout to leave the fantasy college life provides, i guess im just thinking out loud as too what's the best strategy towards gaining empolyment/making my mamma happy.

on another note, shout out online domino's orders. i never get service on my iphone. so in this case, the internets have came in ftw on countless occasions.

So do we praise him for not going the traditional cover letter route ? Or is this pretty much just a real world version of pop up ads ?

If its the latter then holy crap I can see this getting alot worse

Its not about what he did, but how he did it. He thought further than the limits of technology and made something that spoke directly to his end consumer. The way everyone should think when marketing a product or themselves

With many graduates having a hard time finding a job and especially one that they want and like, I must respect the aggressive approach. I too sent an elaborate package to Burton during my senior year of college, which garnered no response whatsoever, so what measures should be taken to get noticed. Although persistence pays off at times, you run the risk of coming off as crazy and yeah...employers don't really want that either!

That is quite frankly, the coolest idea ever. Definitely something to think about with regard to marketing just about anything these days. Though I'll be honest, I don't completely agree that throwing out the fish net and seeing what comes back is the worst idea as I've heard quite a few stories that have garnered miraculous results.

@ DJ Ruckspin, genius observation about this being a "real world pop up ad"

I went to high school with Mike and moved here to NYC with him. He's a great dude and always has amazing ideas like this. I can see how it would freak people out, but I know that Mike wasn't trying to harass him (like how some people approach people in restaurants and such) he just came up with an out of the box idea, because he didn't want his request for a job to end up in the trash (like you said) I think more people need to think like this and be open to clever "applications" like this because you can't just judge somebody by their cover letter.
