SNOOP DOGGY DOGG.
February 4, 2010

I’m obsessed with Google Books right now.  I just dug out the entirety of one of my favorite VIBE issues ever (September 1993), with Dan Winters’ Snoop portraits (pictured below).  You can tell Winters was still developing his characteristic layered-lighting photography, and the LBC hometown hero was also budding into his own.  This is the Snoop I miss and loved… Snoop Doggy Dogg.., so raw and full of unbridled attitude.  But still, you can tell he was young and figuring out his niche in the world… Not all Ed Hardy’d out like today with the pimp cup and rockstar personality. Nothin’ wrong with that, of course.

SCHOOL’S COOL.
December 19, 2009

Talk about cool kids. The Crouches are quadruplets from Connecticut who have ALL been accepted to Yale for college next year.  This is the first time the prestigious academic institution has done so.  Whether or not the Crouches attend is another matter though, as they still need to find out whether their financial aid is in order. Can’t they get a scholarship for Style??

COMPOSURE.
December 19, 2009

I know it’s been a while.  Sorry about that.

It’s kinda easy to post photographs of hot chicks, but I think this form of photography is intriguing aside from the obvious. (NOTE: These are NOT my photographs!)

Look at the tone of these 4 photographs, and how the photographers use the colors, post-production editing, softness/hardness, contrast, and the model’s poses to convey an emotion or sensation.  It’s one thing to shoot a picture of a pretty girl, but to frame a story around it, that is a skill.  The communication that results ultimately becomes that of the photographer’s, moreso than the model herself.

STRING CHEESE.
November 15, 2009

Okay here’s a question I often get asked. What music am I listening to right now? I’m all over the place. I’m sure you want me to talk about hardcore bands as I often do, or the new Raekwon, or some hip new androgynous band.. I dunno. You wanna know what’s NOT cool? Right now, I’m listening to Appalachia Waltz by Edgar Meyer, Mark O’ Connor, and Yo-Yo Ma.

Whatever. Yo-Yo Ma is still cooler than Yo Mama.

Here’s the best song off the album. FIRE! (For some reason, the guy who uploaded the vid says Joshua Bell plays on this song, but he’s wrong.)

WELL BRED.
November 7, 2009

I just made a post over on my main blog about Kim Deal and her contributions to both the Pixies and the Breeders.  Here are some photographs of her from yesteryear (I did NOT shoot these, although I wish I had), in addition to some Breeders’ publicity stills as well.
