Just days before the release, HBO Max has dropped the first seven-minute sequence of the enormously anticipated Mortal Kombat reboot.

The clip, which was shared on the film’s social pages, gives audiences a real glimpse of the Simon McQuoid-directed action film. The opening scene is set in 1617 in Japan’s Hanzo Hasashi Compound, where a gruesome fight scene ensues as Hanzo Hasashi finds that his family is attacked by Sub-Zero after he steps away momentarily. The first seven minutes provide audiences a small taste of the bloodbath to come, as well as the first moments of action of the film.

Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tran as Cole Young, as he discovers his heritage and finds himself also hunted by Sub-Zero, played by Joe Taslim. The R-rated violent reimagination of the video game franchise is set to keep fans on their toes throughout the film. Fans can expect Hiroyuki Sanada to play Scorpion, Mehcad Brooks as Jax and Tadanobu Asano as Raiden.

Mortal Kombat hits HBO Max on April 23.
