'A United Kingdom' Is a Film About Interracial Love During Apartheid-Stricken Botswana
How the marriage between an African prince and a white Englishwoman sparked political tensions.
A United Kingdom, directed by Amma Asante, just released its official trailer and the movie should warrant a position on any film buff’s radar. The period piece focuses on the true story of the political and diplomatic ruction that occurred during the 1940s when Prince Seretse Khama (played by David Oyelowo) of Botswana married Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white Englishwoman who worked as a clerk at Lloyd’s of London. The film not only focuses on the love between the two, but also the conflict and unease their union caused within the nation. With a strong cast and a solid directorial vision by Amma Asante, who also directed the critically-acclaimed Belle, A United Kingdom is shaping to be one of the more moving films slated to come out this year.
The film is set to release in the UK on November 15, 2016. No news of a U.S. release as of yet. Be sure to also check out the trailer to Loving, a true story of an interracial couple facing its tension in the 1950s.
