Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Is an Oceanic Demigod in Disney's 'Moana'
The Rock stars as Maui in this upcoming animated nod to Polynesian mythology.
Who better to play a mythological Polynesian demigod than Hercules himself? That’s Disney’s thinking when it comes to its upcoming animated film Moana as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson swaps out his Greco-Roman chops for a nod to Pacific lore. Starring Johnson as Maui, the film (the 56th in Disney’s animated features canon) takes place in the South Pacific’s ancient Oceania as Maui joins the titular Moana — “a born navigator who sets sail in search of a fabled island.”
Helmed by none other than Ron Clements and John Musker — the same duo behind the likes of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Disney’s Hercules — Moana is set to hit theaters November 23.
