There are few celebrities more polarizing and perplexing than Shia LaBeouf. As part of the promotional rollout for his short documentary LoveTrue, the Even Stevens and Transformers star obliged Complex by granting an interview wherein he answered questions with short, poetic stanzas. The questions touch on standard, behind-the-scenes details — how LaBeouf got involved with the project and his thoughts on metamodernism, for example — but the haiku-like responses answer the questions simply, honestly and enigmatically.

Read some of the quotables below and be sure to check out the full interview here.

I wrote her a fan letter
it’s love

we’re all cut from the same cloth

for a few years now
it’s been quite powerful
Both w/ distance
& to be in the presence of
These people are magical
And extraordinarily strong
It’s humbling

What does metamodernism mean to you both in the context of LoveTrue and in your projects?
It’s a romantic reaction to crisis
It’s a structure of feeling

What was your relationship to Flying Lotus prior to this film?
we know each other through Thundercat
Who I went to elementary school with
I obviously have a great appreciation
for his work
Guy is a fucking genius
Full blown
He blessed our film

Okay, but if money is of no object and you have an instant green light, what is the one thing you’re dying to make?
