Pittsburgh hip-hop artist Mac Miller has had an interesting career trajectory: he made a splash in 2010 with the release of his KIDS mixtape, which was equally cheered and derided for its youthful exuberance and baby-faced sincerity. The rapper’s career then saw a slight dip with the lukewarm reception of his debut album, Blue Slide Park. The FADER‘s newest documentary, Stopped Making Excuses, follows the artist also known as Larry Fisherman’s career from that point forward; opening with Miller playing piano in his half-assembled New York apartment in the lead-up to the release of his third album GO:OD A.M. before flashing back to footage of Mac moving into his home in Los Angeles to record his seventh mixtape, Macadelic. The documentary delves into the Most Dope General’s issues with substances like marijuana and codeine, the creative process behind his mixtapes, and the loneliness that these endeavors entail, as well as his return to Pittsburgh as a Terrible Towel-waving, graduation robe-wearing hometown hero.
