It Took Less Than 24 Hours for an Autonomous Uber SUV to Break the Law
Company blames it on “human error.”
It was less than 24 hours ago that Uber introduced self-driving cars in San Francisco. Now the company is fielding questions in regards to said vehicle committing a traffic violation. In the video above, a driver’s dash cam clearly shows one of the new Volvo XC90’s running a red light. An Uber spokesperson said this about the violation:
This incident was due to human error. This is why we believe so much in making the roads safer by building self-driving Ubers. This vehicle was not part of the pilot and was not carrying customers. The driver involved has been suspended while we continue to investigate.
The new autonomous SUVs have a human driver behind the wheel as well as a technician in the front passenger seat collecting data. The driver is obviously there to take control in situations that may cause safety concerns such as this. It looks like Uber will have a lot of testing to do.
