Long a vision for the future, Daimler is making serious inroads into the development of autonomous vehicles, its latest step being the unveiling of the Freightliner Inspiration, which is the world’s first road-ready self-driving semi-trailer truck. Controlled by the “Highway Pilot” program, the Freightliner Inspiration navigates its way with the help of radar and on-board cameras which track the white lines on the side of the road to right itself while in motion; braking and acceleration are also controlled by the autopilot. Sean O’Kane of The Verge recently had the opportunity to test-ride the futuristic truck (with professional driver in tow, of course). Watch the video above as he gives his thoughts on the benefits of developments in self-driving trucks, as well as some of the current limitations of the technology.
