That daunting time of the year has arrived for record labels, the release of industry sales numbers
That daunting time of the year has arrived for record labels, the release of industry sales numbers for the previous year. The RIAA have released their recap of the 2014 year and, while physical sales continue to spiral toward nonexistence, some positive sales news lies within digital downloads and streaming services. Physical releases accounted for 32% of 2014 revenues while digital downloads hold steady at a 36%-27% edge. However, streaming services jumped again last year, growing 26% to 7.7 million subscribers. Ironically enough, Vinyl’s resurgence in popularity claimed $315 million in sales, up 49% from the previous year. The growth of streaming services will, undoubtedly, prompt sales initiatives for tons of artists in the coming years though the steady hold of digital sales is certainly reassuring.
