Flying Lotus welcomed a very special guest to his weekly BBC Radio 1 show, Residency, last night. Kendrick Lamar, who worked with Flying Lotus on his acclaimed album To Pimp A Butterfly, dropped by to discuss his inspirations and give some advice for up-and-coming artists. During the interview, the rapper touched on his musical influences, from oldies to the gangsta rap his father listened to, and how they impacted the overall direction for the album: “I could have gone into any direction with this record,” he shared. “My heart told me to go with this direction. When the opportunity presents itself it’ll put you in a place you never imagine.” The two also premiered an unreleased track, “Eyes Above,” a cut that never made it to the album due to “political reasons.” Be sure to check the interview out on the BBC Radio 1 website, and stay tuned to HYPETRAK for more music news.
