By the powers of the internet and the negative degrees of separation in NY, a few weeks ago, with ATL’s Awful Records boys in town, I was able to listen to to KeithCharles SPACEBAR’s mixtape, We’re All A Little Triflin. Some background, if you aren’t familiar, Awful Records is the Atlanta hip hop collective on a little different wave than the Versace wielding Migos or the Lil Wayne trolling Young Thug. Their first break came with Father on last year’s, still thriving, Look at Wrist with Makonnen.

While in the studio mixing and mastering the final cuts, KCSB and I were able to discuss the project. He said all of his work is reflective and distinctly comes from specific times in his life. We’re All A Little Triflin is the 24 year olds current view of time of his life between 19 and 22 years old. Raised by women and outwardly being obviously very influenced by it, you’ll to tracks like Different, although it may blatantly be about sex, it’s not too frequent you’ll hear a rapper point out “she didn’t even nut, this n*gga rude as fuck.” Different, minimally, for most rappers verses and mens’ views. Further, he pointed out that while working with other artists he let them totally do their own thing, offering little direction on what they were to write. With that knowledge, it’s very interesting to see his collabs with Mother MaryGold and ABRA be so complimentary to not only his flow but also his production.

The 8-track mixtape is written and produced by KCSB, with co-production credits on S T A C Y to NEVR and on The Come Down to Caleb Stone. The Awful Records team is in Toyko right now for the first time and from there KCSB dropped We’re All A Little Triflin this morning. You can purchase the mixtape on KCSB’s BandCamp here.
