During tonight’s SNL‘s 40th anniversary television special, Kanye West graced the live audience with a short, three-song medley. Dressed in solemn black attire, Kanye donned eerie contact lenses as he performed underneath a large white headlight, which effectively created the impression that the physical boundaries surrounding him were closing in; a visual illusion that was further embellished as Kanye took on the unorthodox positions of performing lying on his back during “Jesus Walks,” before shifting to all four as he was joined by Vic Mensa and Sia to perform “Wolves.” The song selections emotionally span the low and high points of Kanye’s life, and offers a glimpse of Mr. West’s future sound.
