After first revealing its FCV Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, Toyota is back with its production model, the Toyota FCHV.

The latest breakthrough in Toyota’s 20 years of research with fuel cell vehicles, this new sedan features similar performance as vehicles running on gasoline, boasting a cruising range of 700 km (435 miles), a refueling time of about three minutes, and the ability to start in -30 degrees Celsius (86° F). The eponymous fuel cells generate the electricity needed to drive the car through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen that produces only steam as an emission.

Emerging technologies, of course, come with a hefty price tag and this is no exception. The new sedan is expected to go on sale for ¥7 million‎ JPY (approximately $68,700 USD) when it launches in Japan by April 2015 and later in the summer in the U.S. and Europe. The carmaker says initial availability will be limited to regions where hydrogen fueling infrastructure is being implemented.
