Beyond a cemented name in the auction circuit and his standing as a superstar amongst pop artists, Jeff Koons’ extensive body of work does indeed go transcend his iconic steel balloon animals. The ever-progressive Whitney Museum in New York gives Koons his first (surprisingly) large-scale New York museum presentation with the aptly-named “A Retrospective.” The exhibit takes viewers through the entirety of Koons’ multi-medium canon, beginning with his catalyzing Luxury & Degradation series, gliding through Inflatables, and concluding with works that were finished just last week. While Whitney “Contemporaries” and press were treated to an early look through the exhibit, “A Retrospective” opens at the Whitney Museum of American Art today and will run through October 19.
