J. Cole continues to roll out promotion of his stellar Born Sinner LP by unveiling the music video for “Crooked Smile.” The song, which borrows lovely vocals from the talented TLC, shows empathy for the way women are objectified in society. The song, while important, plays the background to a larger story of separation painted by director Sheldon Candis. For a refreshing turn in rap videos, the mini-film ties in nicely with themes presented in the album, specifically the conundrum of ‘sinning for good.’ Tying it all together is an ending homage to Aiyana Stanley Jones, a 7 year-old girl killed during a police raid in Detroit.
