Art dealer and gallery curator Jeffrey Deitch has announced that he will be stepping down as the director of the Los Angeles MOCA at the end of the month. This may not come to a surprise to anyone familiar with the 63-year-old’s short tenure at the famed independent museum as it has been the source of much controversy. Since taking the reins of director in 2010, chief curator Paul Schimmel as well as multiple board members from the art community have coincidentally stepped down from their respected positions. Although Deitch has built a fresh, hipper image as well as increased attendance during his brief directorial stint, the LA-based institution is still far from financial stability. With rumors circling that Deitch will return to New York to his namesake gallery Deitch Projects, it will be interesting to see who MOCA will look to in replacing him.
