Few things can be as terrifying as careening uncontrollably through space with no contact to planet Earth. Giving viewers a firsthand experience in a space mission gone wrong is the upcoming film Gravity. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, the film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as a young astronaut and shuttle commander, respectively. While completing a routine spacewalk, their shuttle is struck by space debris and almost completely destroyed – thus leaving them stranded as the only survivors and further hampered by a limited supply of oxygen and no contact with mission control back on Earth. Optimized for 3D and IMAX 3D thanks to extensive post-production effects work, Gravity is set to open this year’s Venice International Film Festival in August before hitting theaters on October 4.
