Well, isn’t this an unexpected break from the off-putting musical feuds we’re use to seeing at the top of headlines? The recording artist, songwriter and actor William Adams – or will.i.am – is in the news today for taking legal action against fellow multifaceted musician Pharrell and his latest creative endeavor, the YouTube channel i am OTHER. According to official court documents obtained by Rolling Stone, the Black Eyed Peas member claims he owns the copyright to the phrase “I AM” and Pharrell’s logo is “confusingly similar” to Mr. Adams’ stage name. We’re assuming he’s referencing the use of lower case lettering. will.i.am argues that Pharrell plans to use his “i am OTHER” image on clothing and additional items just as his promotional goods bare a similar “I AM” logo. The legal document reads, “The registration of the mark…is likely to dilute the I AM mark and the WILL.I.AM mark.” So what does Pharrell have to say about this? His lawyers released a statement to Rolling Stone in which the 40-year-old pop star denies all allegations. “I am disappointed that Will, a fellow artist, would file a case against me,” Pharrell says. “I am someone who likes to talk things out and, in fact, I attempted to do just that on many occasions. I am surprised in how this is being handled and I am confident that Will’s trademark claims will ultimately be found to be as meritless and ridiculous as I do.”
