The Los Angeles-based professional management and design conglomerate AECOM has recently been anointed the tough task of revitalizing the central terminal area (CTA) at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). With over 60 million passengers traveling in and out of the world’s sixth busiest airport, the mile-long CTA roadway at LAX serves as a face for the transportation hub as it is both the first and last thing travelers see upon entering or exiting the airport. This presents a major opportunity to enhance its customers’ experience with LAX the brand. Through the cooperation of architecture, lighting and graphics, AECOM’s project aspires to insert grandeur design elements that provide an architectural hierarchy and draws inspiration from its existing elements. The redesigned CTA features a polychromatic light ribbon that synchronizes with its entry pylons, thus giving definition to the elevate roadway. It further sees the addition of 3D super-graphic terminal identifiers and 91 white sculptural light poles that establishes an ultra modern airport experience. With phase 1 complete, the remaining project initiatives include the integration of aerodynamic metallic canopies, escalators, new lighting designs and more, all of which aims to increase comfort and convenience for LAX travelers.
