So far, all we know about Jay-Z‘s upcoming album Magna Carta Holy Grail is that he’ll be giving away a million copies of the project for free, and that he’s teamed together with Rick Rubin, Timbaland, Pharrell and Swizz Beatz for the LP, set to hit shelves July 4. Looking to write his own rules with the release of the new project, it looks like we’ve stumbled upon some more insight from the upcoming album courtesy of Courtney Love. Speaking with The Huffington Post, Love shared that she granted permission to Jay to use lyrics from Nirvana‘s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on his new album. Going on to share:
I’m letting Jay-Z use lyrics– [daughter] Frances would freak [if she knew this.] Jay-Z’s huge and we’re friends. I mean we’re not besties or anything…. They [used the lyrics] without asking, which is kind of nervy but the business side has been taken care of so it’s fine.
Jay-Z previously expressed his admiration towards Nirvana and even shared his thoughts about the single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in Pharrell Williams’ 2012 book Pharrell: Places and Spaces I’ve Been. We’ll just have to wait and see the final outcome, but I wouldn’t want to be the one to bet against Hov.
