Fashion can be used not just as a medium for expression, but also social commentary – as illustrated by Casely-Hayford‘s new collection for Spring/Summer 2014. The English label, run by the father-son duo of Joel and Charlie Casely-Hayford, now presents an ode to London’s famed Southbank skate spot through its collection of contemporary casual wear. The title of the collection, “Secret Colonies,” refers to the rebellious undercurrent of skating as a subculture, simultaneously referencing the struggle between London city government and the skate community in the current debate over Southbank’s future. The brand has married loud pattern layers with oversized fits to echo the skaters’ fluid motion, the graffiti-covered walls of Southbank, and skating’s brash spirit within these flowing pieces.
