In the same cultural landscape where Calvin Broadus Jr. – aka Snoop Dogg – was once the king of oversized gilded cups, Miley Cyrus was queen of the boppers, whose voice was the soundtrack to red-cupped parties in America. All of that has changed, with Snoop favoring ‘Lion’ as a suffix and Cyrus abandoning a formerly ‘tame’ presence altogether. This sweeping change has spiraled into new musical styles for both artists, the crossover of which can be found in “Ashtrays and Heartbreaks,” the latest single from Snoop Lion‘s Reincarnated LP. Despite some criticism, the reggae-pop single does harbor major ‘hit potential,’ and does well to highlight the strength of both artists’ new direction.
