Detroit-based watchmaker Shinola recently opened its factory doors to HODINKEE, allowing the publication access to experience firsthand the emerging brand’s mission to re-inspire American manufacturing. Located inside Detroit’s historic Argonaut Building, which first served as GM’s design studio back in the day, the factory now produces Shinola’s watches, bicycles and leather goods. Choosing quality over quantity and starting small, the first limited edition production of 2,500 watches quickly sold out with most of the parts coming from Swiss movement maker Ronda. However, Shinola hopes to eventually seed production of these parts back home in Detroit and usher in a new age of All-American design and manufacturing.
