PUNK: Chaos to Couture Exhibition featuring the Likes of Thom Browne

Organized as the flagship Spring 2013 exhibition by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be “PUNK: Chaos to Couture,” an examination of punk’s roots in the 1970s and both its impact and continuing influence on the world of high fashion. Appearing in the museum’s second-floor Cantor galleries, the exhibition is set to include approximately 100 designs and will juxtapose original garments from past decades with more contemporary, ready-to-wear and haute couture designs from the likes of Thom Browne, Burberry’s Christopher Bailey, Hussein Chalayan, Balmain’s Christophe Decarnin, Dolce & Gabbana, John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld, Martin Margiela, Hedi Slimane, Riccardo Tisci, Junya Watanabe, Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo and many more as it highlights do-it-yourself aesthetic influences like safety pins, razor blades and studs. In honor of the event, Thom Browne will also be resurrecting a range of punk-inspired designs – originally released as a part of his Fall 2012 collection – to coincide with the rest of the Moda Operandi-organized collection. Finally, each mannequin head treatment and mask will be designed by Guido Palau, who notably did the same for the renowned Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty display. “PUNK: Chaos to Couture” will open May 9 and remain open for viewing at the museum through August 14.
