Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne — the duo behind NYC label Public School — take a decidedly throwback approach to making clothing. Born and bred New Yorkers, they manufacture each and every piece in the city’s garment district, making use of its renowned expertise and quality materials. The clothes, however, are thoroughly modern at heart. Urban, yet sophisticated, Public School’s spin on traditional menswear involves tailored silhouettes, denim and plenty of leather, everything that a male city-dweller could desire in his closet. For Spring/Summer 2013, the label plays with fabric, proportion and details — leather and waxed canvas jackets, minimal shirting, and twisted tailoring that are equal parts street and refined. We particularly dig the Empire Jacket — with its lambskin construction and mesh woven back — and the Earliblaze, a zippered vest in washed Morimoto lamb. Also of note this season is an update of the denim jacket in waxed Cone canvas and lambskin, while the basic blazer is reworked with a cardigan collar and wool crepe/silk faille fabric combo.
