SECOND/LAYER may have been born in a Venice, California basement studio, but the label takes to the streets for the second installment in its Fall/Winter 2013 video series. Filmed by Phillip R. Lopez, the clip highlights a handful of this season’s key pieces — a gabardine shawl collar long coat, structured long sleeve, gabardine folded trouser and cashmere blanket — that embody a “tailor made, non-gender bias form” with a sober aesthetic of “minimal Chicano.” What this translates to, roughly, is free-sized proportions, pure silhouettes and smart fabrications – elements shaped as a whole by the street attitude of SoCal’s less-affluent neighborhoods. It’s a formula that appears to be working well so far for the label. While the film’s protagonist appears to be caught in a cage of sorts, SECOND/LAYER seems to have broken free of obscurity with a successful showing at New York Fashion Week last month and a forward-thinking perspective that should bode well for the label’s future.
