Nikon is making its first foray into the DX-format compact market with the announcement of the COOLPIX A camera. Promising DSLR-like image quality in a compact body, the COOLPIX A packs a 16 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and a 28mm equivalent, F2.8 prime Nikkor lens. While the camera lacks an optical viewfinder, an optional add-on viewfinder can be had for $450 USD. Capable of shooting 12- or 14-bit raw images at a sensitivity ranging from ISO 100-25,600, the COOLPIX A is the new compact camera to beat. Look for the powerful pocket shooter later this year at official Nikon stockists with a price tag of $1,100 USD.
