Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America has called Silicon Valley its home for the past 20 years and recently it moved its headquarters from Palo Alto to Sunnyvale, California. With its grand opening taking place last month, our friends over at Mercedes-Benz kindly opened their doors and took us on a guided tour of the state-of-the-art facilities. Harboring a large number of Mercedes-Benz’s “competency centers” — projects that focus on developing different technologies — the large office area has been compartmentalized to feature a range of open spaces including an outdoor terrace for meetings. With the help of a highly-skilled interior design team, the once empty shell has been transformed into a space that meets the exact needs of each operation. Upon moving in to this monstrous facility, employees were given the chance to get creative by designating names to laboratories. For example the “chocolate lab,” which is involved with developing a digital drive-style app, meets up to its billing with mounds of chocolate stored in the space. The layout of the three-story structure has been designed with movable glass and “idea paint” walls throughout, alongside foot-flow paths that encourage employees from different departments to exchange ideas. Unique to this research and development center is the advanced autonomous driving area that features custom tech-heavy booths for an engaging virtual experience. Peep the video above and enjoy the unique insight into this world-class working environment.
