KAWS exists on two planes. There is the heralded, somewhat ostentatious artist represented by grandiose solo shows at coolguy beehives like Mary Boone Gallery and Galerie Perrotin, an army of coveted vinyl toy collectors, and even balloons in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade – larger than life, so to speak. In a distinctly contrasting manner, there is the freakishly driven Brian Donnelly, a quiet kid from New Jersey; notably reclusive painter, sculptor and creator; he who recently shut the doors on his lucrative and beloved OriginalFake brand on account of its ‘distraction’ from his work. PAPER Magazine has covered KAWS from the streets to the league, and has made the artist the focus of its November Art Issue this month. Head over to the magazine’s website to check out the feature on KAWS, which takes an in-depth look at the artist from both sides of the fence.
