Crafting Sole Molds with Red Wing Shoes

Heritage footwear manufacturer Red Wing Shoes has just released this video showcasing just how much work goes into making just a mold for a shoe sole. Following master mold maker Craig Holst, we’re given a breakdown of how the company makes its molds in-house. From crafting a shoe bottom to making a reverse mold and measuring and weighing the mold, the process proves to be a very labor-intensive affair and with a turnaround of five to six days per mold, it’s clear that Red Wing takes its shoes and shoe molds very seriously.
