J.Crew‘s Spring/Summer 2013 collection was most notable for an increased willingness to push chromatic boundaries. More colorful than seasons past, the range was partially inspired by American painter Ellsworth Kelly in its usage of bold shades and Victor Vasarely, considered the father of optical art. In the wake of Americana-influenced collections that made heavy use of neutrals and workwear-inflected hues, Spring/Summer 2013 was a refreshing blend of teal, marigold, apple green and lilac. The season’s brighter, more playful approach was also reflected in the usage of bleached, washed and generally lighter fabrics — the Ludlow suit in a chambray makeup, for instance. Despite the insistence on wild colors however, the collection retains familiar, easily-incorporated Frank Muytjens standbys — suits, nautical tops, shorts and chinos, all of which are artfully paired in this season’s lookbook.
