“Metamorphosis: Give Me Your Wings” is an exhibition by Japanese artist, Mr. (Masakatsu Iwamoto). The show features an installment interspersed with his latest paintings, aimed at depicting post-disaster anxiety specifically related to Japan’s March 11 earthquake. The main focus, a mock living environment belonging to a victim of the disaster, serves as a visual representation of the Japanese mentality post nuclear disaster; cluttered belongings (some necessary, many recreational) make up a bedroom-cum-living space. Acrylic on canvas as well as watercolor on paper make up the artwork that also represents, albeit in a pleasantly skewed manner, the mentioned mentality through anime-esque characters and landscapes. The exhibition gallery runs from September 13 through to October 27 at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York.
