Having made a name for himself with his naturalistic paintings of African-American men in heroic poses, New York-based artist Kehinde Wiley is set to introduce his first ever paintings of female subjects. Produced in collaboration with Givenchy‘s Riccardo Tisci, the new exhibition, “An Economy of Grace,” features portraits of New York City African-American women in aristocratic poses taken from historical portraits by the likes of Thomas Gainsborough and Jacques-Louis David. Meant to “reconcile the presence of black female stereotypes that surrounds their presence and/or absence in art history,” the exhibition sees each of the women in dresses designed by Tisci and inspired by a six-hour trip through the galleries of the Louvre. Set to open at Sean Kelly Gallery on May 5, “An Economy of Grace” will also be the subject of a new documentary from filmmaker Jeff Dupre, due out later this year.
