In jeffstaple’s 14th part of the 1-2-1 w/jeffstaple interview series, the founder and creative director of Staple Design and Reed Space finds Paul Mayhinney in an honest and casual chat about his deep love of music and endless racks of records. Paul Mayhinney is the founder and keeper of Record-Rama, the world’s largest record collection. Having begun his collection in the early 1950s, Mayhinney then started a business after amassing numerous thousands of records, and also commenced cataloging every passing record in a historically invaluable archive. This business thrived up until the turn of the millennium, when record prices lost almost all competitive leverage to CDs and MP3s. Record-Rama shut its doors in 2008 during the global credit crunch for lack of consumer or archival interest. While Mayhinney rues how technological advancements have combined to erode the value of his passion’s work, he diligently continues to seek fundraising options and a worthy buyer here.
