$4.06 billion USD is a lot to imagine, yet the Walt Disney Company announced that they have completed their acquisition of Lucasfilm – the legendary film company – for that price. Sold in $2.21 billion cash, with some 37.1 million shares making up the rest, the acquisition marks the meeting of two film giants that have shaped the canon of global cinema. The purchase is only trumped by Disney’s 2006 acquisition of Pixar for $7.4 billion. Disney, which also owns ESPN, ABC and A&E (amongst others), now adds another aspect to their large share of the multimedia arena. Fans of Lucasfilm will be intrigued that the deal, which was announced in early October, includes a commission for a new Star Wars film, starting production in 2015.
