Despite the prevalence of Range Rovers in the confines of urban environments, the iconic vehicle is and always has been made for the fringes of civilization — a place where pavement stops and some of the world’s most exceptional scenery begins. To demonstrate the capabilities of the world’s most luxurious 4×4, Land Rover recently invited us, along with a host of like-minded driving enthusiasts, to Northern Africa where we embarked on a bona-fide two-day adventure through the Atlas Mountains. We arrived in Marrakech on the evening of November 16 and were introduced to the new Range Rover the following morning, an updated incarnation of the luxury SUV made lighter, stronger and more refined than its predecessors. As the first all-terrain vehicle to feature a lightweight all-aluminium monocoque body structure — each one British-designed and engineered at Land Rover’s development centers in the UK – the vehicle saves over 420kg in weight, improving both fuel economy and carbon emissions. Elsewhere, the introduction of Land Rover’s Terrain Response® 2 enhances all-terrain performance and state-of-the-art adaptive dynamics further advance the SUV’s ride quality, a performance package rounded out by a combination of both diesel and gas-driven engines. As we drove to the highest point in Northern Africa, each driver also took in the staggering views from a cabin that retains the Range Rover’s traditionally strong architectural forms, emphasized by clean, elegant surfaces and indulgent trimmings. A tailgate picnic on the mountaintop and stay at the Palais Namaska that evening rounded out the weekend’s festivities; yet, it was the exhilarating time spent driving through Morocco’s unforgiving rural landscape and the Range Rover’s luxurious ride that stayed with us long after we had left.
