Surfing in the winter may seem a bit like a paradox: why would anyone willingly throw themselves in a body of water for a prolonged period of time when its way below freezing? While we pondered this, surf-specific outerwear brand Finisterre came up with new and interesting takes on layering staples. Their 2012 fall/winter lookbook is a journey entrenched in the beaches of St. Ives, United Kingdom–the birthplace and hometown of famed surf legend Matt Smith. The ocean seems as much a part of life as driving or walking, and the brand has done a good job of capturing their connection to water through these epic, vivid images. Somehow the prospect of swimming in the winter gets a little warmer when we consider waterproof wool base layers, and more.
