Don Rogerson, an Iowa-based freelance writer, has written a book detailing the name and history of every Manhattan street, past and present. Thanks to Kickstarter, this book will examine such matters as why Houston Street is pronounced “house-ton” and not “hews-ton,” the origins of Oyster Pasty Alley, Dirty Lane, Golden Hill and more. While other books described the origins of current Manhattan place names, they don’t include the former names or the historic streets that no longer exist and provide a nice backdrop for contemporary time and place. Manhattan Street Names Past and Present has already reached its goal on Kickstarter and will begin with a small, 300-book run.
