Life + Times, Jay-Z‘s new YouTube channel, recently caught up with Dapper Dan for the elusive designer’s first interview in over 20 years. A legend in his native Harlem, Dan made his name handcrafting high-end custom clothing and co-opting luxury brands and making it accessible to the street. An expert at printing, Dan can be seen showcasing his wares, many of which look as new as they did the day they were made, despite being over 30 years old in some cases. A hit with hustlers and rappers alike, Dapper Dan’s clothing could be seen on the likes LL Cool J, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane and many more. As much a cultural historian as a designer, Dan has also been witness to the evolution of Harlem both physically and culturally. Check out the video to hear the man discuss how he got into designing, how far it has taken him, and how Harlem has influenced both him and his designs.
