Designer Irving Harper Explains Why Paper is a Versatile Medium

Irving Harper’s Rye, New York home is filled with evidence of his creativity. The design director of the Nelson Office has created almost 500 pieces of paper art and sculptures, most of which inhabit his living quarters. Starting as a way to relieve stress, Harper’s skill was honed through making models for presentations at work, where he was responsible for some of the most iconic designs of the 20th century — the Marshmallow sofa, Ball clock and Herman Miller logo among them. In this video, the artist speaks on the beginnings of his artistic inclinations, the impact of African art on his style, and why paper is such a versatile medium.
