“Be yourself.” It’s a phrase someone hears at least once in their life. It’s a bit silly – you are yourself. But how do you be someone else? In agi & sam’s Spring/Summer 2013 line titled “How to agi & sam”, designers Agape Mdumulla and Sam Cotton take a look back at Japanese scroll paintings to create a garish line filled with bright blues, creamy colors and smoky hues. Shot by Luke Stephenson and styled by Jenny Kennedy, their most recent lookbook features tracksuits, Brando-inspired leather jackets, and even a lifejacket all shot in a dullish room with ’80s-inspired carpeting that contrasts well with agi&sam’s playful style. Model Daniel Turner with oversized frames and a cute mustache wears the line solidly and seems to come straight from a Pendleton Ward sketch. Despite the socks and Birkenstock sandals, his slightly smug look combined with the eccentric style gives a sense of comfort. Plus, the colors and patterns — although outlandish when isolated — meld beautifully and never try to outshine each other. As usual, the tailoring and fit is impeccable.
