Linearity is the theme of Ukranian architect/interior designer Sergey Makhno‘s latest work, a weekend house with straightedged tendencies. With a budget of only $100,000 USD, the home is an exercise in minimalism. The weekend house is two-stories and comes equipped with a barbecue, garden, “concrete fireplace, kitchen and bath built in the earth,” and “two bedrooms, toilet room and library.” Shelves and cabinets are arranged neatly into squares as walls and ceilings extend vertically against the shadows cast by rails and window shutters. Even the restroom porcelain contains no rounded edges as each side is a neatly formed rectangle or trapezoid surrounded by black square tiles and white oblong tiles. As expected, the stone path leading towards the “cube” is geometrically designed. As the location for a weekend getaway, Mr. Makhno’s adventures in elementary geometry are interesting given that he equates such simple, everyday shapes with vacation and relaxation – possibly suggesting the importance of doing such at regular intervals throughout one’s lifetime.
